Evren Savci, San Francisco State University
Subjects of Rights and Subjects of Cruelty: Islam and Homosexuality in Contemporary Turkey

Savci analyzes the historical production of the 2010 Islamic backlash against homosexuality in Turkey and the discourses and debates that followed from it among Muslim women and LGBT activists. She shows how the dominant rights-based understanding of social justice foreclosed certain coalitions, and argues for different frameworks that would enable potential solidarities between differently injured citizens of the nation.

Evren Savcı, an Assistant Professor of Women and Gender Studies at San Francisco State University, is completing a book, Queer in Translation: Paradoxes of Westernization and Sexual Others in the Turkish Nation.

Sponsored by the Yale Research Initiative on the History of Sexualities.
